September 5, 2018: Grandparents Day
On Wednesday 19th September, we will be inviting all Grandparents (and any other extended family members) to attend our Grandparent’s Day celebrations. The morning will begin with a special Prayer Parade in the Antonio Centre beginning at 8:35am. Following the prayer parade Grandparents will be invited and welcome to move to their grandchildren’s classes for a visit. Following the class visit, the grandchildren will then walk their grandparents back to the Antonio Centre (at 9:30am) where our Choir will perform for them and a morning tea will also be provided and available for them during this performance. We expect the morning to conclude around 10am.

August 21, 2018: Queensland Catholic Music Festival
Congratulations to all our students who participated in last Friday’s QCMF competition. Our School Band and both the Senior and Junior Choirs participated in the event. Our Junior Singers received a GOLD and Senior received a SILVER. Our School band combined with St Mary Mackillop band achieved a GOLD Award! This is an outstanding performance for our Band and choirs and I would like to also thank Mr Dave Smith for his work with our band and preparing them for this event and to Mrs Heather Francis for her work with both our choirs.

July 31 2018: Successful School Fete
Huge congratulations and sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the highly successful St Anthony’s Fete on Saturday. I thoroughly enjoyed soaking up the atmosphere of the day. We couldn’t have asked for a more spectacular Brisbane winter’s day. Redland’s Deputy Mayor, Lance Hewlett officially opened the Fete. In his speech he summed up the great warmth and spirit of the St Anthony’s community. This spirit of Christian hospitality is something that I’ve experienced during the 3 weeks that I’ve spent here. It takes countless people to plan and facilitate a successful Fete, however I would like to especially thank Cathy Williamson, Desiree Jenetsky and Heidi Howgate for courageously putting their hands up to convene the day. Congratulations on a job well done! The year level dance performances were outstanding. Congratulations to our highly talented teachers and students.

June 27, 2018: School Athletics Carnival
Last week we completed our St Anthony’s athletics carnival and it was an incredible success. I would like to congratulate all students for their participation and supportive spirit displayed throughout the day. A big thank you to Mr Marrinan for preparing and coordinating the day. It takes a lot of time and effort to organise these events. We had many parents and families attend the days and we are very grateful for your support during the events. The announcement of house winner and age champions will be made during the our first assembly back for term 3 (Friday 20th July).

June 19, 2018: Colour Fun Run
Last Wednesday, we celebrated the feast day of our patron, St Anthony. The day commenced with a school Mass and then moved to house groups enjoying morning tea and specially developed activities throughout the middle of the day. Our P & F organized in the afternoon session a full school colour fun run and it was a spectacular event. I would like to thank and acknowledge Mrs Kellie Jacobsen for coordinating and organizing the day’s events and to our P & F committee and all the family helpers who assisted during the fun run.

June 8, 2018: Oxley House Involvement Mass
Last Sunday Oxley House celebrated our St Anthony’s parish mass. Thank you to the families and staff who attended this special mass. It was wonderful to have so many St Anthony’s families celebrating mass together. Thank you to Mrs Kellie Jacobsen for preparing the students for the mass.

May 23, 2018: QC Cup Netball
St Anthony’s had 2 teams competing in the Netball competition involving Queensland Catholic Schools known as the QC Cup. I would like to acknowledge Mrs Kellie Jacobsen and Mrs Ida Geaney for coaching the students and preparing them for the competition. The senior team came runners up (only lost the final game by one point!) and the Junior team came third in their competition. A great effort by all the teams. Pennants will be presented at Assembly on Friday June 1.

May 3, 2018: Invitational Cross Country
Today over 100 of our students represented St. Anthony’s at our own annual invitational cross country meet. We had over 10 other catholic schools involved on the day. We were very happy with the students’ behaviour, sportsmanship and effort made in their events and throughout the meet. Their commitment to our team and the 10-week training schedule greatly prepared them for this competition. I would like to thank Mr Brendan Marrinan, staff and the parents who helped out during training mornings. Pennants will be handed out during assembly on Friday May 11.

May 3, 2018: ANZAC Day Dawn Service
Last Wednesday many students, families and staff attended the ANZAC Day dawn service at Cleveland. We had a large group representing St Anthony’s on this special occasion. It was a powerful service and it was wonderful to have so many people from St Anthony’s attend the service.

March 6, 2018: Swimming Carnival
Last Friday we held our school swimming carnival for Years 3 – 6. It was a fantastic day for all of the students. I would like to thank Mr Brendan Marrinan for his preparation leading up to the event and coordination of the day.

At assembly this Friday (March 9) we will announce the overall points House winner, Age Champions and the winner of the “Kathy Otto Award”. This is the 18th Anniversary of the Shield which is in memory of a past St Anthony’s family member, Kathy Otto, whose love of swimming and her invaluable contributions to the preparation, organisation and running of the St Anthony’s Swimming Carnival are well remembered by those who knew her. The Shield is awarded each year to a Boy and a Girl who exhibit the qualities of leadership, effort, participation and team spirit.

February 20, 2018: NAPLAN 2018
Many of you may be aware that St Anthony’s has been selected to join a number of Catholic, independent and state schools, across Australia, to conduct their NAPLAN assessments online this year. The Year 5 students will complete all four tests online. The Year 3 students will complete all the tests, except the Writing test, online.

In 2017, as part of our preparations, we conducted a 'School Readiness Test' (SRT) to confirm we have everything in place to administer NAPLAN Online successfully and seamlessly for our Year 3 and Year 5 students this year. The students will again engage in a school readiness test, which will be conducted on Thursday 19 April at 9.30am.

St Anthony’s will be conducting their NAPLAN assessments on May 15-18, in the following order:
» Tuesday May 15 –Writing
» Wednesday May 16 – Reading and Comprehension
» Thursday May 17 – Language Conventions
» Friday May 18 – Mathematics

The teachers in Year 3 and Year 5 have started preparing their students for the online assessments by running them through the example assessments on the NAPLAN Demonstration Site. Families of students in Year 3 and Year 5 will receive information about the trial and the tests leading up to both.

If you would like further information regarding NAPLAN Online you can locate it at: https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/FAQs

If you would like to look at the public demonstration site you can locate it at http://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/naplan-online/naplan-online-public-demo

February 13, 2018: Lent
This week Catholics participate in significant events in our Liturgical Calendar. Today our students enjoyed pancakes for Shrove Tuesday and participated in a liturgy where their Lenten promises were burnt. The students made a promise today to God that they will try to carry out in the Lenten period. Thank you to those volunteers who assisted with making over 400 pancakes!

Lent is known as a forty-day preparation time, although it is actually 44 days long. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends just before the celebration of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday evening. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. On Ash Wednesday we are marked with ash as a sign that we are ready to begin our Lenten journey towards Easter.

February 6, 2018: Welcome Back BBQ
Last Friday afternoon/night we held our welcome back to school BBQ. We had many families attend the event and it was a tremendously positive and relaxed atmosphere. Thanks to all the families for making the time to be at this BBQ and enjoy the event. I would also like to acknowledge and thank all our staff for attending the night and assisting with the preparation, cooking and serving of the BBQ throughout the afternoon and night. We have a wonderful community at St Anthony’s and I thoroughly enjoyed the event
